MLM firm SmartValue, often known as “SVPSL,” is situated in Delhi, India.

“A revolutionary notion that has transcended itself beyond the ordinary,” is how SmartValue portrays itself.

In 2000, SmartValue was established. I’ve also seen a date of incorporation of 2006, indicating the business was run haphazardly for the first six years.

Managing Director Shivakumar Krishnamourthy is in charge of SmartValue (also spelled Krishnamoorthy).

Though I’m not certain for sure, I think Krishnamourthy was a founding member of SmartValue.

Boddu Prasad Reddy and Nirmala Arora are now serving on SmartValue’s board of directors in addition to Krishnamourthy.

Despite being active for more than 20 years, SmartValue’s website doesn’t truly offer an official business history. I likewise couldn’t figure out what Krishnamourthy was doing before SmartValue.

Given that SmartValue only caters to the Indian market, I have a suspicion that part of this may be due to linguistic problems.

At least as far as I can tell in English, SmartValue appears to have escaped any regulatory action since its start.

Products from SmartValue

Marketing “100 + High Quality & Value-for-Money Products,” according to SmartValue.

There are way too many items there to mention them all here. However, SmartValue does offer a comprehensive product inventory with retail prices on its website.

The following product categories may be found on the website of Smart Value:

BSM (SmartValue marketing materials) for agriculture edibles

instructional DVDs and books

foods and drinks

fitness and wellbeing

home health

Personal care and way of life

The production and country of origin information for any of SmartValue’s goods is not disclosed.

The “purchase now” button on any of SmartValue’s items also took me to a different website that seemed to be down. Not sure if that is a short-term bug or a persistent issue.

Plan for SmartValue Compensation

The compensation structure of SmartValue is a needlessly intricate muddle.

Below, I’ve done my best to simplify it as much as possible.

Shopper Commissions

Affiliates of SmartValue receive commissions on the sale of goods to retail customers.

The difference between the wholesale cost and the retail price paid is used to determine retail commissions. Depending on the things bought, this sum varies.

Sales Promotions

An affiliate of SmartValue must create 100 miles to be eligible for sales incentives. This is accomplished “based on your frequent personal goods purchases.”

While SmartValue doesn’t seem to offer a scale, miles are dependent on business volume.

An affiliate’s and their downline’s mileage are rewarded under the Sales Incentive Plan:

generate the first 900 miles, and each additional 900 miles up to a total of 4500 miles will pay Rs. 4800.

Additionally, SmartValue has the option to divide payments for their first 900 miles, paying Rs. 1600 for every 300 kilometers produced (so three smaller payments till the first 900 miles are reached).

Anything beyond 4500 kilometers is compensated using a binary format.

An affiliate is positioned at the head of a binary team that is divided into two sides (left and right) by a binary remuneration structure:

The binary team’s initial level has two slots. These initial two places are divided into another two positions each to create the second level of the binary team (4 positions).

The binary team is formed in stages, with each stage containing twice as many slots as the preceding stage.

Direct and indirect affiliate recruiting is used to fill positions on the binary team. The depth to which a binary team can expand is unbounded.

Beyond 4500 miles, the binary team’s mileage will be distributed in a 1:2 or 2:1 ratio. Whichever side is twice the other doesn’t matter.

SmartValue adds a “step rate” as opposed to simply paying out on mileage and being straightforward.

The Group Sales Incentives you earn reduce based on the Step-Rate for the given week after the first 4500 miles.

The group sales incentives known as “Step-Rate” are given for each “Step” of 900 miles.

This fluctuates from week to week and is structured such that the company’s total payment for sales incentives is capped at Rs. 45 for every distinct mile of sales.

According to my understanding, this indicates that the commission paid out every matched 2:1 or 1:2 mile across the binary team lowers with each step of 900 miles paid out, starting from Rs. 4700 baseline.

Every week, step rates are reset. SmartValue claims to pay out Rs. 3400 each step, however, this doesn’t imply anything.

With each step, the step rate drops, and it’s unclear how many Business Points are in a mile.

Repurchase Plan commissions are paid to SmartValue affiliates based on the number of Business Points they create (BV).

BV is produced by every sale or purchase of a SmartValue product. Depending on the product(s) being sold or bought, the amount of BV varies.

When BV is understood, determining Business Points is simple: 1 Business Point equals 12,000 BV.

The same binary compensation scheme used to pay “Sales Incentives” is also utilized to pay commissions under the Repurchase Plan (see above).

The binary team keeps track of business volume, and when either a 1:2 or 2:1 ratio of business points are met, it pays out.

In the binary team, it is 1 business point on one side and 2 business points on the other. It doesn’t matter if the binary squad on one side has one or two business points.

The Repurchase Plan pays Rs. 500 each Business Point, up to 5 Business Points every week, based on these eligibility requirements (so a 5:10 or 10:5 ratio).

According to SmartValue, Business Points 6 to 500 produced in a week “will come under weekly sales volume,” but they don’t go into additional detail.

Banner Bonus

The Flagship Bonus matches 10% of the Repurchase Plan profits generated by affiliates that were personally recruited.

Bonus for Retail Consistency

A SmartValue affiliate must produce 2 Business Points each week for two consecutive weeks to be eligible for the Retail Consistency Bonus.

Retail Consistency Bonuses are given.

A “home fund” on 51 to 500 Business Points created and “additional income” on up to 5 Business Points earned, a “vehicle fund” on 6 to 50 Business Points generated, and so forth.

I feel the criteria apply over a rolling continuous three-week period even if specific dollar amounts are not given.

Recognition and Compensation

The Recognition and Rewards offered by SmartValue are a little peculiar. You have three “recognition plans” that correspond to three sets of rankings.

In reality, SmartValue operates independently of one another and has three ranking systems and Rank Achievement Bonuses.

The needed active status requirements are categorized here, along with the ranks and associated awards.

Active Qualification for SmartValue

According to SmartValue, active qualifying is necessary to be eligible for “rewards and recognition.” This seems to be referring to the three tiers of rank achievement bonuses.

Given by SmartValue, the following are the current qualifying requirements:

By the following standards, an Associate may be deemed Active:

He or she needs to aggressively market SVPSL’s goods and services.

When the Recognition plan for that Financial Year is being calculated, his or her membership must be in an active position.

He or she should take a proactive role in business promotion activities including trade shows, seminars on training, workshops for new products, and company-run initiatives.

He or she should actively push business activities while properly adhering to the company’s code of conduct.

The Company’s determination of whether an Associate is Active or not is binding on the Associate and is based on the Associate’s degree of participation in the aforementioned activities.

SmartValue Verdict

SmartValue advertises itself on its website as

One of the top direct selling companies in India that offers products for agriculture, personal and beauty care, home care, health and wellness, and education.

In essence, it is an Indian version of Amway. That isn’t necessarily a negative thing, but SmartValue has some rather serious issues that are difficult to overlook.

The product selection is perhaps SmartValue’s biggest selling point. There is plenty there.

I am unfamiliar with the Indian market, thus I am unable to remark on the competitiveness of the market.

Vitamin C is sold by SmartValue for Rs. 299 for 60 pills.

SmartValue is competitive, at least for vitamin C, while comparable on Amazon India starting at Rs. 270. Other things not so much.

The cost of a 340 g jar of SmartValue’s “Nourish Crunch Peanut Butter” is Rs. 409. Kissan Crunchy Peanut Butter is available on Amazon for Rs. 352 for 920 grams.

The environment for commerce today, particularly eCommerce, is very different from the one that SmartValue started back in 2000. Although the firm sells a variety of items, it’s possible that it hasn’t kept up with the competition.

Some people were puzzled by SmartValue’s “educational books & DVDs” product segment. The listings are purposefully ambiguous, but there is nothing marketed like the “listen to cassettes” crap from decades ago.

Smart students have a very commercialized tone about them. Be cautious of any too aggressive promotion of SmartValue’s instructional books and DVDs.

The 45-day return policy offered by SmartValue suggests that the firm provides good customer service.

If you or your customer is not completely satisfied with the products they have purchased, you or your customer may return the items in good condition and request an exchange within 180 days of the date of purchase, or you or your customer may request a refund of the product cost within 45 days of the date of purchase.

written note on paper I’m not sure if SmartValue is okay with really upholding their return policy.

This brings us to the pay structure of SmartValue, which is unquestionably a nightmare. Having a poor presentation on their website (which served as the basis for the official documents I used) and being convoluted only to be convoluted.

Any SmartValue affiliate who could have approached you would be asked to provide a brief explanation of the remuneration structure as a litmus test.

If they trip, which I can almost promise they will go on. It’s hardly worth getting sucked into a hoop-jumping competition that, even after being dissected, appears to be mostly redundant in many areas.

To begin with, why are there three different sets of affiliate rankings and bonuses? This is so absurd that it might simply be shortened.

A “two-day workshop in Delhi” is stated as a reward, but why? Instead of being a perk, training your sales team ought to be required—or, in the case of MLM, at the very least, strongly urged.

There is also the issue of steps, kilometers, and business points. Get rid of everything and use Business Volume like the rest of the world. Call it anything else if you want to give the impression that it is different, but having three different BV measures is absurd once more.

Regarding retail sales, I’m not sure and am not ready to give SmartValue the benefit of the doubt.

We invite you to purchase and utilize our offerings. We are very confident in the caliber and worth of these goods.

Once you are wholly happy with our items, we urge you to sell them.

In reality, how many SmartValue affiliates never get to the second paragraph?

All affiliates need to know that they will get rewarded if they join up, buy things, and refer others to do the same. I believe this is a major factor in the less than ideal shopping experience on the SmartValue website, along with the compensation plan’s excessive complexity.

Again, in SmartValue, retail transactions are feasible.

Merchandising profit is the ability to purchase goods from a business for an Associate Price (AP) and resell them to customers at the Maximum Retail Price (M.R.P.).

…but there are many indications that they aren’t the main emphasis.

The following is how SmartValue defines group sales to calculate residual commissions:

based on the number of items you and your IBA team have purchased.

Another statistic that is important to SmartValue’s compensation structure is miles.

The company’s mileage definition is presented as follows:

Group Miles: Your team’s IBA will accrue Group Miles for you based on first-time product purchases.

You will receive 100 percent of the Group Miles (up to the first 100 miles) as part of your Group Sales Incentive.

Group MyMiles: Group MyMiles is Miles that you have accrued as a result of frequent purchases of goods made by your team IBA (after the first 100 miles).

You will accrue all of the Group MyMiles for your Group Sales Incentive as Group Myles.

Personal MyMiles: Personal MyMiles is Miles that have been accrued to you as a result of your recurring, private product purchases.

For your Group Sales Incentive, you will accrue all of your Personal Myles.

Group Sales Incentive: Miles will be accrued in your IBA id based on the number of goods sold by your team of IBAs.

The Group Sales Incentive will be given to you by the qualifying requirements and the terms of the Group Sales Incentive Plan based on the weekly miles (Group Miles and Group MyMiles) accumulated.

That’s a lot of “purchase stuff and get people to join you in doing the same.” Products sold by your team of IBAs are mentioned in “Group Sales Incentive,” however it is unclear to whom.

Almost everything mentioned above depends on affiliate sales rather than traditional retail sales.

The intrinsic power of SmartValue to “modify the rules” as they see appropriate is the final point.

In its sole discretion, SmartValue Limited maintains the right to amend any rules, terms, conditions, advantages, or incentives, with or without prior notice.

Those are some very purposefully ambiguous discretionary standards. It simply seems strange to combine all this with their reward information, though I’m not suggesting SmartValue is cheating affiliates out of commissions.

MLM firms are entitled to alter their pay scheme and eligibility requirements at any moment, and they frequently do so. It sounds more like “we’ll pay you if we want to” when you say this.

Overall, I’m not sure that SmartValue is focused on retail. A product-based pyramid scheme is how SmartValue is run if the majority of overall firm revenue comes from affiliate expenditure (regardless of what affiliates do or don’t do with items once they’ve been purchased).

No, minimum purchase is not necessary. No, you do not need to purchase to be eligible for commissions. No, you are not compensated when you sign up as a free member.

Nothing matters. In reality, an MLM business is a de facto pyramid scheme if the majority of its revenue is earned by affiliates.

Take care when approaching.
