When I saw the headline, “Utah’s governor pointed to a controversial essential oil MLM as a way to protect school kids from COVID-19,” I did a double-take.

In April 2020, the FTC told doTerra to stop making false claims about COVID-19. Surely, the Governor of Utah wouldn’t keep making these claims, would he?

He wasn’t, thank goodness. Even though there may still be a reason to worry.

On September 28, Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox sent out this message on Twitter:

The post, thankfully, talks about doTerra’s “sanitizing wipes” and not their essential oils.

According to the FDA,

One of the best things we can do to stop the spread of COVID-19 is to wash our hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

If soap and water aren’t around, the FDA has a plan.

recommends that people use a hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol in it.

” 70% ethyl alcohol” is what their website says the doTerra On Guard Sanitizing Wipes contains.

I don’t have a problem with doTerra giving sanitizing wipes to schools if you look at it for what it is.

The cynic in me can’t help but think this is a way for doTerra to link its brand to COVID-19, which brings us back to the FDA complaint.

It’s not a big jump from doTerra’s sanitizing wipes, which do work, to their other products, for which they make false medical claims.

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

Exhibit C:

It took me about 2 minutes to find these three examples.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time doTerra has tried to link itself to a medical condition.

At the end of 2019, the company said that it would give $5 million to St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Cincinnati.

In exchange, the hospital gives doTerra access to its patients who have cancer.

Business Insider also says, citing research by Vote Smart, that “doTerra International gave (Governor) Cox $10,200.”

I think anyone who looks at this with an open mind can agree that it’s not a good look.
